Everyone went quiet. The woman looked completely stunned.

The teen held up a small mascara tube. “It slipped out of my hand when I was grabbing my wallet, and I didn’t even notice until just now.”

Security checked the receipt, confirmed the woman only paid for the skirt, and scanned the mascara. The alarm beeped again — it was the missing item.

The poor woman was nearly in tears, thanking the teen over and over.

She looked so embarrassed — but more than that, relieved.

I’ll never forget how quick that teen was to speak up. It was such a small gesture, but it changed everything in that moment.

Never assume the worst about someone — you never know what they’re carrying, or what they’ve already been through.
